Lodge Details

Number of rooms: 8 Property Size: 0 acres Lodge Style: Lodge Ownership Type: Other

Country: Panama

The Canopy Camp is located in Panama and Central America's most diverse region - Darien in eastern Panama. Towering Cuipo and Ceiba trees overlook the lodge, home to hundreds of species of birds, many mammals, reptiles, insects and more. It is a birder's paradise, where many regional avian specialties can be found, including Black Oropendola, Spectacled Parrotlet and the mighty Harpy Eagle. Inviting African Safari-style tents, well-equipped with full-size beds, fans and electricity, provide a home base for natural and cultural exploration in Darien!

How this lodge promotes good stewardship of the environment:

Clean, renewable energy for the Canopy Camp is provided by 30 solar panels of 250 watts each. Natural cooling in the lounge area is provided by a Poly-Al roof, and tents are surrounded by natural vegetation. A majority of the camp construction comes from a sustainably-managed teak plantation sourced in Panama, planted by the owner himself in 1990. Plentiful fresh water is collected from the mountain range of a neighbouring hydrological reserve.

Goods are purchased locally to support the local economy in Darien, Panama's least-developed province. We get involved as much as we can in local community initiatives, and visit local artisans with guests to experience the culture and lifestyle of Darien.

Like its sister lodges, Canopy Camp Darien strives to take many measures in its daily operations to reduce energy, waste and water in many ways, and we educate our guests on our sustainability efforts, and invite them to join in some of these endeavours in their daily lives.

What To Do:

The Canopy Camp specializes in high-quality birding and nature tours. During a week at the Canopy Camp, experience the marvellous birds and wildlife with your expert naturalist guide, who will take you to some of the best nature-viewing trails and areas in eastern Panama. Amidst the fantastic birding, you will drive to the end of the Pan-American Highway at Yaviza, to the main cultural centre of Darien. Explore the banks of the Chucunaque River for rich bird life along the edges and visit a local Embera village, where you can learn about their culture and daily lives, and purchase beautiful artisan handicrafts. Return at the end of each outing to refreshing cold drinks and delicious meals featuring Panamanian and International flavours! Then enjoy your evenings under the stars, drifting off to the calls of owls and the sounds of the forests of Darien after dark.

What They Have:

Canopy Camp Darien is located in the lowlands of eastern Panama, but its spacious tents with plenty of ventilation allow a light breeze to pass through and therefore no need for air conditioning. Each tent has a fan and private bathroom, located just outside the tent on the platform, a few steps away. Wifi is available in the lounge and dining room. Canopy Camp Darien offers high-quality birding and nature tours led by world class, bilingual naturalist guides. Meals are served family-style in an open-air dining room, offering a delicious variety of Panamanian and International fare. Prior to dinner, appetizers and bar service are available, and wine is complimentary with dinner. Special dietary requests are happily accommodated. Airport transfers are included.
