The Canopy Tower is a unique ecolodge located in the vast lowland rainforest of Soberania National Park, along the banks of the Panama Canal and less than an hour drive from Panama City. Once a US Air Force Radar Station, the Canopy Tower has been converted into an 12-room ecolodge offering some of the best birding and wildlife observation in all of the Americas. The observation deck overlooks the canopy of the rainforest, where toucans, tanagers, cotingas, euphonias, woodpeckers, raptors, along with two species of sloth, Mantled Howler Monkey, Geoffroy's Tamarin, Green Iguana and other animals can be seen close and comfortably at eye level. The dining room, lounge and library are located on the third floor of the Canopy Tower, surrounded by the treetops out every window. At ground level, several species of hummingbirds actively visit the feeders and plants in the garden.

How this lodge promotes good stewardship of the environment:

The Canopy Tower itself is a unique and innovative "recycling" project - taking a no-longer used metal building and converting it into a world-class ecolodge! A majority of the construction materials used in its restoration are salvaged materials from the former Panama Canal Zone houses and railway. From energy and water-saving initiatives and recycling projects, the Canopy Tower operations does its part for sustainability. A major initiative is the reduction of plastics, from buying food in bulk to reduce waste materials to offering water in jugs instead of individual bottles, as well as asking our guests to re-fill water bottles daily. We take great care to educate guests at the Canopy Tower on our efforts to conserve water and energy and ask them to join in our endeavour in their personal lives.

What To Do:

The Canopy Tower specializes in high-quality birding and nature tours. The world-famous Pipeline Road is only a short drive away, where over 450 species of birds have been recorded, including the elusive Rufous-vented Ground-Cuckoo and rare Harpy Eagle. The banks of the Chagres River and Panama Canal are accessible at the town of Gamboa, offering great opportunities to see water birds, American Crocodile, Spectacled Caiman, turtles, and occasionally Neotropical River Otter. All tours are led by Canopy Family's team of expert, fully bilingual naturalist guides.

The Miraflores Locks at the Panama Canal are only 20 minutes away from the Canopy Tower, along with many other Panama City attractions - Casco Viejo, the new BioMuseo, shopping and much more.

What They Have:
