Vilcabamba, in southern Ecuador, has attained world fame as "the valley of longevity". Its superb climate, 20°C year-round average temperature, and adjacent Podocarpus National Park, make this an ideal place for an ecolodge where the basic necessities of life are met with: direct drinking water supply from the aquifer below; unpolluted air; balmy sunlight, stream water access; ecological trail system.
Several modes of lodging were implemented here: riverside wooden cabins on stilts, adobe rooms for share (or not), camping area. All of them include well supplied kitchens, favoring a sense of "feels like home".
How this lodge promotes good stewardship of the environment:
1- the voluntary private protection of several micro-habitats by five contiguous landowners, as proven in the formal Government declaration of the area as "Bosque y Vegetación Protectores Rumi Wilco".
2- Regular pick up of non-biodegradable garbage around nearby roads, trails and riverside, circling the nature reserve proper.
3-Use of renewable materials in ecolodge construction; responsible handling of wastes; recycling, reducing, repairing, reusing whenever feasible.
4- Self-guided trail system for guests and the general public with taxonomic and interpretive signs for environmental recreation and education.
